An Intelligent Guide To Retirement

Retirees used to be able to hang it up at 65 and count on a sizeable pension, social security checks and a fair bit of savings to get them through their golden years. These days the future is a cloudier. Underfunded pension programs, social security and 401(k)s that have turned into 201(k)s, combined with increasingly long retirement periods, mean that Americans need to scrupulously save while structuring investment portfolios to provide income for decades. A person thats 65 today who invests like they have a short time horizon may well end up living to be 100, says investor Ken Fisher. Their life expectancy is going to keep increasing the longer they live.

When it comes to retirement, there are often more questions than answers. You dont know how long youre going to live, what your health is going to be, what the economys going to be, what the markets going to be, how much money youre going to have, says Ken Kamen, president of Mercadien Asset Management and author of Reclaim Your Nest Egg. Thankfully, there are experienced advisors around to share wisdom on how to best prepare for an unclear future.
