I am helping my grandfather who is disabled and one year before reaching his full retirement age. We started off just going to file for retirement, but I figured if there was a way for him to draw both, that would be wonderful. I have tried numerous times to call the social security office, and I haven't gotten an answer yet, I also looked on the FAQ on the website and found nothing dealing with this. Please help, he is deffinately in need of some assistance.I believe you can only apply for one at a time, however, there is a program in our state called Old Age Pension and you can get disability at the same time with that as well as social security retirement. You might look into that, then ask the person who processes the application (you have to go in person here) about the retirement part of it. (this is a state aid, not federal and you apply with your county).I know my grandma could not get her social security retirement benefits if she kept collecting her dead husband's or if she was on disability. That's why I think you can only collect one. She luckily had a nice case worker at the social security office who helped her figure out which one she would get the most with (her husband's benefits) and which one to keep.
